Robustness of clocks to input noise

چکیده
To estimate the time, many organisms, ranging from cyanobacteria to animals, employ a circadian clock which is based on a limit-cycle oscillator that can tick autonomously with a nearly 24h period. Yet, a limit-cycle oscillator is not essential for knowing the time, as exemplified by bacteria that possess an “hourglass”: a system that when forced by an oscillatory light input exhibits robust oscillations from which the organism can infer the time, but that in the absence of driving relaxes to a stable fixed point. Here, using models of the Kai system of cyanobacteria, we compare a limitcycle oscillator with two hourglass models, one that without driving relaxes exponentially and one that does so in an oscillatory fashion. In the limit of low input-noise, all three systems are equally informative on time, yet in the regime of high input-noise the limit-cycle oscillator is far superior. The same behavior is found in the Stuart-Landau model, indicating that our result is universal.

Stochastic models of cellular circadian rhythms in plants help to understand the impact of noise on robustness and clock structure
Rhythmic behavior is essential for plants; for example, daily (circadian) rhythms control photosynthesis and seasonal rhythms regulate their life cycle. The core of the circadian clock is a genetic network that coordinates the expression of specific clock genes in a circadian rhythm reflecting the 24-h day/night cycle. Circadian clocks exhibit stochastic noise due to the low copy numbers of clo...
متن کاملA New Ultra-Wideband Low Noise Amplifier With Continuous Gain Control
This paper presents a new variable gain low noise amplifier (VG-LNA) for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The proposed VG-LNA uses a common-source (CS) with a shunt-shunt active feedback as an input stage to realize input matching and partial noise cancelling. An output stage consists of a gain-boosted CS cascode and a gain control circuit that moves the high resonant frequency to higher freq...
متن کاملEvolving Biological Clocks using Genetic Regulatory Networks
We study the evolvability and dynamics of artificial genetic regulatory networks (GRNs), as active control systems, realizing simple models of biological clocks that have evolved to respond to periodic environmental stimuli of various kinds with appropriate periodic behaviors. GRN models may differ in the evolvability of expressive regulatory dynamics. A new class of artificial GRNs with an evo...
متن کاملOptimal entrainment of circadian clocks in the presence of noise
Circadian clocks are biochemical oscillators that allow organisms to estimate the time of the day. These oscillators are inherently noisy due to the discrete nature of the reactants and the stochastic character of their interactions. To keep these oscillators in sync with the daily day-night rhythm in the presence of noise, circadian clocks must be coupled to the dark-light cycle. In this manus...
متن کاملA chaos-based video watermarking algorithm
The intriguing characteristics of chaotic maps have prompted researchers to use these sequences in watermarking systems to good effect. In this paper we aim to use a tent map to encrypt the binary logo to achieve a like-noise signal. This approach makes extraction of the watermark signal by potential attacker very hard. Embedding locations are selected based on certain principles. Experimental ...
